Members of the Bristol & West Progressive Jewish Congregation were treated to a cool forest walk on one of the hottest Saturdays in 2017!
Members of this congregation have an annual Forest of Dean weekend retreat in the Field Study Centre in Parkend. This year they were greeted with a hearty “Shabbat Shalom” by a Forest of Dean & Wye Valley tour guide, who planned an afternoon walk with as much shade as possible.
The walk started at the Dean Forest Railway’s Parkend Station. Walkers climbed up past Parkend Church into the cool, wooded trails. When they got to the next village of Whitecroft, they waved to a steam train going past. They continued through tracks and trails, past the site of the Princess Royal Colliery in Bream, past the spoil heap, and back into the woods. They were led back to their starting point along the narrow path by the River Lyd.
The afternoon was rounded off by chocolate cake and tea!
