Exploring roots

MaryLou Mull from California is a great-great-great granddaughter of a Forest of Dean Freeminer. When she decided to come to the Forest to explore old family haunts, she knew exactly whom to contact: Forest of Dean & Wye Valley Tour Guides. MaryLou preferred not to drive, and instead asked for a guide to accompany her for the day on a tour of places that meant something to her and her family.

They certainly covered a lot of ground, from New Fancy to the Devil’s Chapel scowles,  from St. Briavel’s Chuch and Castle to Darkhill Iron Mines, from Speech House to the Dean Heritage Centre for a fortifying lunch.  The local wildlife showed off, with a large family of wild boar traipsing across the road in front of the car, five or six deer scampering through the bluebells, and a sheep suckling a lamb in the middle of Folly Road!

Great fun.
